Running and cycling routes:
1st Run:
Both the short course run (5 Km) and long course run (10 Km) start in a northern direction on Route 49 at Packard’s Field opposite the White Mountain Athletic Club. The route takes a back loop around Corcoran’s Pond. Right on Boulder Path Rd along the golf course, left on West Branch Rd, right at River Rd, complete the circular River Rd and take a left again on West Branch Rd back to Boulder Path Rd; take a right on Snow Brook Rd and after passing Snows Brook take a left on the fitness trail along Snows Brook past Corcoran’s Pond back to Packard’s Field and into the transition area for the start of the cycle leg.
For the long course Duathlon, this route will be covered twice.
Bike route:
Bike route (30 Km) begins at the transition area which is situated on Packard’s Field. Leave the transition at the south-western corner of Packard’s Field along the parking strip next to Packard’s Rd, left on to Packard’s Rd, right at the T onto Route 49; right on to Tripoli Rd; left up Mountain Rd to the base of the ski lift area; turnaround on Mount Tecumseh; back downhill on Mountain Rd and Tripoli Rd to Route 49; turn right (south) on Route 49 along the Mad River; at 6.8 miles out on Route 49 turn around and go back north on Route 49 back to the transition area where the 2nd run begins.
For the long course Duathlon, this route will be covered twice, with the turn-around to start the 2nd loop, on Route 49 between the transition area and the White Mountain Athletic Club where the race started.
2nd run:
The second run leaves the transition area in the north-eastern corner, runs off road below Route 49 and after 150 yards goes up to Route 49 and is further the same as the first run, with the finish next to the transition area on Packard’s Field.
The second run of the long course (7.5 Km) is a two lap run, basically the same as the first run, but with a shorter distance to the turn-around on Boulder Path Rd.

Winning Time Chip Timing System:
The Black Bear Duathlon Weekend’s events will be timed by New England Timing utilizing the Winning Time Chip Timing System (WTCTS). No other timing system may be worn. Participants will receive their WTCTS chip with ankle band and their bib number at race registration.
The Winning Time Chip will give you an official “gun” time as well as an unofficial “net” time, from when you cross over the starting mats. You and your chip must pass over the timing mat systems (start and finish as well as the mats in the transition area and other mats that might be placed at the different turn-around spots), to receive your “net” time. If your start time is not recorded, you will only receive your “gun” time.
As USAT sanctions our race, we abide by their rules and want to point out that “net” times are unofficial and are for your personal use only.
You must return your chip to us upon finishing the race or via mail should you forget to turn it in otherwise you will be billed $30.00!!!

Spectators:
The transition area of a multi-sport event (du-and triathlons) is the heart of the event. This is where a lot of the action is. Tritanium Sports believes that spectators are also participants in our events; we have therefore designed the area around the Black Bear Duathlon’s transition to be spectator friendly. The long course event is designed with a two lap course for both the run and the cycle legs, spectators at the transition area do not have to go elsewhere to look for the action as the athletes will be passing this area twice during both the run and cycle legs. The transition area on Packard’s Field is the place to be, this is where the following action will take place:
- Start of the race,
- 1st run, run- through to 2nd loop,
- T1 change-over,
- 1st cycle through to 2nd loop,
- T2 change-over,
- 2nd run, run- through to 2nd loop,
- Race finish.
Due to the nature of the layout, spectators will be able to park their cars before the race begins and for the duration of the event move around the transition area on foot, experiencing both the run and cycle legs in the same area. Spectators who would like to move away from the transition area to experience the action on other parts of the routes, will be able to make use of wide sidewalks and short cuts taking them to other parts of the run and cycle routes. By police order, no driving around or parking on Route 49 (the cycle route) will be allowed during the event.
